In 2025, it has been reported a staggering 76% of primary schools and 94% of secondary schools will be unable to cover their expenses next year. This financial strain could have serious consequences, as schools face challenges in funding the government’s proposed pay rise for teachers, as well as providing the necessary support for students with special educational needs. The issue is made even worse by the rising costs – schools expect a 3.4% increase in expenses, while their funding is set to grow by only 2.2%. This creates a worrying £700 million shortfall, leaving schools in a tight spot and requiring the government to step up its investment in education.

Although spending on schools in England has grown in recent years, making up for past school cuts, the need for support for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) continues to escalate, further stretching budgets thin.

The situation has grown even more alarming given the current state of school finances. In December 2024, the government’s accounts for local authority – maintained schools revealed that one in seven schools are now running a deficit. This marks a significant increase from the previous year and is the highest deficit rate seen since at least 2010, highlighting just how dire things have become for schools across the country.
